Local Families Launch Farm-to-Family Food Coop

In 2022, 4 families united to access fresh, local food. Instead of driving around Boulder County from farm to farm and ranch to ranch, or attempting to squeeze in trips to farmer’s markets, an idea was born: create an easy way to unite farmers, ranchers and producers with families and individuals wanting access to the best food Boulder County can offer.

In its first season, the coop served 85 households offering a weekly "better than organic" produce box from MetaCarbon Farm in Hygiene, and 100% grass-fed beef splits from a rancher in La Salle, weekly orders from an online shopping cart linking members to dozens of regenerative, organic, and better than organic (BTO) farms and ranches.

The all-volunteer operation met weekly during the growing season at a commercial kitchen in Longmont, where they aggregated food from hyper-local, local, and regional farms -- plus products from local food makers -- to distribute to club families. Local farms included Hispanic Women's Proyecto in Fort Collins, Rough & Ready Farm in Longmont, and Kilt Farm in Niwot.

“We ran a survey of potential members and they told us they want committed relationships with farmers,” said Ben Sargent of Longmont (pictured above), one of the founders. "People told us they wanted convenience, like the CSA box. Almost unanimously, people said they wanted community meals. In 2022, we had 5 different potlucks where people could meet and bring the family."
