To keep us strong and healthy during the winter months, we stocked the coop with a range of delicious, nutritious superfoods. Note: We are not doctors, please consult with your health care provider if you have questions.
- Sea Buckthorn berries, frozen. These are the berries Red & Ben picked back in August. They can be eaten one by one for a super-tart treat. Or blend them and add to yogurt, smoothies, cereal, etc. Sweeten with honey to mellow them out. East 2-4 tablespoons per day for several days in a row, once or twice a month. If you do get sick, eat them every day until 100% better.
- Elderberries, dried. We cook these at low simmer for 20 minutes with a few cloves added, then pour into jars. Add honey to taste while the syrup is still warm. Keeps in fridge for a month. Take 2 tablespoons per day, or more if you feel like you might be getting sick. Contains: Vitamin C, phenolic acids, anthocyanins. Flavanols: quercetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin.
- Tart Cherries, dried. Contains: Melatonin and tryptophan; Copper, Potassium, Manganese, Magnesium, Iron, Vitamin A.
- Blueberries, dried. Contains: Vitamins K and C, plus anthocyanin.
- Cranberries, dried. Contains: Potassium, zinc, calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, and phosphorus; flavonoid antioxidants and anthocyanin.
- Currants, dried. Contains: four to five times more vitamin C per serving than an orange, with anthocyanins, polyphenols, and minerals.
- Apple Rings, dried. Contains: Malic acid and polyphenol antioxidants. Key minerals: Potassium, sodium, iron. Trace minerals: selenium, copper, and manganese.
- Flame Raisins. Also lots of minerals and antioxidants!
- Shilajit powder. This is a naturally occurring mineral supplement high in fulvic acid, said to improve thyroid function and called “the destroyer of weakness” in Ayurvedic medicine. Some say to mix 1/16th to 1/8th tsp of Shilajit powder with lukewarm water, milk, or organic honey, take once or twice a day, after meals – others say to take 1-2 teaspoons. Not recommended if you have if you have Sickle Cell Anemia, Thalassemia, or Hemochromatosis. Do not heat, unless by adding it to tea immediately before drinking. Store in a cool, dark place.
